Are you managing paper clips or are you managing a company? 

Too many people dwell on managing paper clips, which is a phrase that I use to describe those who focus so much on the smallest things that they can’t see the big picture. Details are important, but as a business leader, seeing the big picture is much more valuable than fiddling with paper clips.

Strategic planning is necessary for taking a company from here to there, but if the process is weak, then the outcome will reflect that. If the process is truly strategic and it commands change, then the outcome will be that of growth and success. Use these guidelines when planning strategically:
  • Build a strong agenda with clearly identified intentions
  • Keep the stream of thoughts and communication at a strategic level
  • Ask “what if”, “why not” and “what has kept us from achieving that” type of questions
  • Spark creativity and reward new ideas
  • Remove all barriers and set achievable, but challenging goals
  • Assign specific tasks as well as an accountability person
  • Allocate specific deadlines on all tasks and goals
  • Stay future-focused, not stuck in the past
  • Invite a larger circle of employees to participate, not just the C-level

For the most effective planning process, work with a third-party facilitator that can provide an outside perspective, free of pre-conceptions.
